The conference’s football preseason Media Day on Friday will be overshadowed by its inability to finalize a media rights deal, which is the worst-case scenario.

that with Stanford president Marc Tessier-Lavigne’s resignation on Wednesday, the 10 current campus leaders either just arrived or are short-timers.

The complication – and this is where the June 30 date comes in – is that conference expansion potentially makes the deal worth more, especially with football. More teams mean more games to show and a greater return on investment for the network or streamer. But here’s the Catch-22: The Pac-12 wasn’t going to commit to any expansion candidates until it had a deal in place and one that would pass muster with the 10 continuing members. Meanwhile, San Diego State, the No. 1 expansion target and a potential vehicle for the conference to maintain a profile in Southern California, needed to know if it was invited for the 2024-25 school year before June 30.

All of which led to a comedy of errors over the last month or so – the letter from SDSU president Adela de la Torre to MWC commissioner Gloria Nevarez in early June jumping the gun and saying the school intended to leave, Nevarez responding, “We’ll miss you” and announcing the conference would withhold a $6.6 million disbursement against the exit fee, and de la Torre responding that no, it was a misunderstanding and they hadn’t really committed to leave yet .
