The scandal that unfolded following the death of Awaab Ishak shocked the country. The two-year-old died following prolonged exposure to mould at a Rochdale social flat in December 2020.
Here, Mr Gove thanks the M.E.N. for its campaign work and the thousands of readers who got behind the petition demanding action. He also pays tribute to Awaab's parents for their courage and determination in the face of unthinkable loss. In a tragedy of so many dimensions, among the most scandalous is that Awaab’s father first raised his concerns to Rochdale Boroughwide Housing in 2017.
Today, Faisal Abudullah and Aisha Amin saw ‘Awaab’s Law’ receive Royal Assent – and once again I salute their determination, their courage and their dignity in their tireless search for justice: not just for their family, but for all residents of social housing. And those who persistently let tenants down will not only be named and shamed by my department; they will be hit where it hurts.
My determination to introduce housing management qualifications for senior staff – another measure in the Act – will change the culture so that residents are always treated with respect and receive a high level of service.
