GOOD secretary-general Brett Herron said it was unacceptable that the court overlooked the allegations, which also included 188 voters who used one household as their home address and admissions from those who had taken part in the alleged fraudulent registration of voters.
The three by-elections in southern Cape Town were triggered by the resignations of GOOD's three ward councillors in April with a plan to join the DA. Herron said he was on Monday made aware that as many as 188 registered voters in Ward 16 had been reflected to have the same home address on the voters' roll. He added:
“To permit the by-elections to proceed in such circumstances is unacceptable in a country where corruption is rife. It sends out a message that fraud is acceptable,” Herron said. In its answering affidavit, the DA said some of the voter registration information had been collected by its volunteers who went out on foot to “canvass and search” for new and registered voters before they were registered online with the information they had provided.
