Wondering out loud. . .if the sentence is that long, why aren't convicted persons not taken into custody to start their sentence immediately after sentencing

How u kill ur own mother, I can't even think of killing my mother and she said she didn't want me when I was very young. Not from let me tell you the story. Her exact words and I never not once had ill feelings towards my mom and I tried to give her everything. Sad
