“I know your political perspective so it’s a little risky for me to say this,” one former senior official told me, “but if you look at the folks we appointed, I think, objectively, they were rule-of-law conservatives — what Trump would refer to as ‘Establishment Republicans’ — and people who share the same philosophy as the folks who ran the department in the [George W.] Bush administration.
