Birmingham gets $21.6 million federal grant for Civil Rights District roadwork

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited Birmingham on Thursday, June 30, 2022, and announced a $1 billion plan to reunite communities divided by infrastructure. Birmingham received a grant of more than $21.6 million, according to an announcement by Buttigieg on June 28, 2023. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced that the Biden-Harris Administration has awarded more than $21.6 million to pay for street infrastructure in Birmingham’s Civil Rights District.

That’s a total of $23,281,306 from the RAISE discretionary grant program allocated to the two different infrastructure projects in Alabama. “Using the funds in President Biden’s infrastructure law, we are helping communities in every state across the country realize their visions for new infrastructure projects,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “This round of RAISE grants is helping create a new generation of good-paying jobs in rural and urban communities alike, with projects whose benefits will include improving safety, fighting climate change, advancing equity, strengthening our supply chain, and more.

“This is such great news for the Birmingham area,” said U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell. “I was so proud to help the City of Birmingham secure this $21 million grant to develop the Birmingham Urban Trail, and I know that it will go a long way in making our city more walkable, bikeable and livable.
