The Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday that the governor had the legal authority to forbid local officials from requiring residents to wear masks in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Gov. Greg Abbott speaks at a press conference in Austin on Dec. 17, 2020, regarding COVID-19 and the Pfizer vaccines that have been sent to hospitals across Texas. On Friday, the Texas Supreme Court gave Abbott a victory in his fight with urban-area leaders over mask mandates.

City and county officials balked at Abbott using his emergency powers to block public health measures intended to respond to the emergency. But the court ruled that state law gives Abbott the authority to do just that.Texas Republicans ended a patchwork of local rules they say hurt business. They also eroded powers of city councils.

And it answers a two-year-old debate: whether Abbott overstepped his authority by banning local leaders from enacting their own mask mandates during a public health emergency. "As state officials continue to take aim at Harris County and other large urban centers, we will not back down," Menefee said in a statement."You can rest assured that the Texas Supreme Court will have more opportunities to consider whether state officials are overreaching."
