Victorian drivers will face hefty fines as new high-tech cameras are deployed to crack down on mobile distractions and seatbelt usage.

Six mobile cameras fixed to trailers will attempt to catch motorists across more than 200 sites and aims to prevent further fatalities across Victorian roads.

Drivers using their phones will now be caught with six AI cameras patrolling 200 locations. Picture: NCA Newswire/Mark StewartDuring the three month trial, drivers detected using mobile phones or not wearing seatbelt by the cameras were issued warnings instead of fines. Drivers will see the robo cops across the state with several locations set up in accident prone areas such as Coldstream, Caroline Springs, Berwick, Tyabb, Kyneton and Castlemaine.

“Using mobile phones behind the wheel puts lives at risk and can result in tragedy,” he said in April.
