Families of the passengers who were on board the Titan submersible could sue OceanGate Expeditions for up to $1m despite them signing a waiver, a legal expert has claimed

It has since emerged safety concerns were raised about OceanGate’s submersible as far back as 2018. A letter sent from the Manned Underwater Vehicles Committee of the Marine Technology Society warned the “experimental” expeditions could end in negative outcomes ranging “from minor to catastrophic”., Titanic director, deep-sea explorer and part-owner of submersible firm Triton, has said he also had some misgivings about OceanGate’s safety.

OceanGate Expeditions’ submersible Titan went missing on Sunday during its descent to the wreck of the Titanic. Whether the families would be able to be successful in court would depend, said Dr Oberheiden, on the availability and strength of evidence supporting the claim, such as expert opinions, documentation and witness testimonies.
