Former cheerleading coach Robert Kotara, 36, was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in prison for sexual assault of a minor.A San Antonio cheerleading coach sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday after being found guilty of sexual assault of a former student who he had instructed for years at a private gymnasium.to the charge in May as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

He stood before Judge Christine Del Prado on Thursday in the 227th District Court and expressed remorse for having a relationship with a minor girl. Kotara, 36, also apologized for embarrassing his family. Kotara was 33 when he was arrested in January 2020. The girl, then 18, told police that he had been her gymnastics teacher since she was 10 and that the sexual assaults had become a"regular occurrence" since she was 16.

Del Prado found him guilty and opted for the maximum sentence under the guidelines the state suggested. Several other cases pending against Kotara were taken into consideration for the sexual assault sentencing, and dismissed.
