Trump was arraigned on the charges and made his first appearance in federal court in Miami, Florida, last week, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. The former president was charged with 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information, one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, one count of withholding a document or record, one count of corruptly concealing a document or record, one count of concealing a document in a federal investigation, one count for a scheme to conceal, and one count related to alleged false statements.
Trump is the first current or former president to be federally indicted. He was indicted on state charges by a grand jury in Manhattan in March. The former president is still under a grand jury investigation in Georgia for his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and under special counsel investigation for his alleged role in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
