Gov. Abbott signs DEI bill into law, dismantling diversity offices at colleges

But starting in January 2024, Texas campuses must eliminate DEI offices, mandatory DEI statements and training.

He asked for the community’s patience while his team works to understand “the contours of the new legal framework and how the UT System will implement its oversight under the new legislation.” Abbott also signed a bill that codifies tenure into state law and makes it easier for universities to revoke the designation from faculty.Republican lawmakers unsuccessfully tried to eliminate the designation in Texas altogether.

Currently, tenure policies indicate professors can only be terminated for a justifiable cause or under extreme circumstances, such as program discontinuation or severe financial restraints.
