South Africa’s National Assembly approved a new law that will pave the way for the introduction of universal health insurance, a plan its critics argue will be financially unsustainable and impossible to implement effectively.
Nicholas Crisp, the head of the health department, has said that about 8.5% of gross domestic product is already spent on health care, and that once duplication and inefficiencies are removed from the system, the funding gap isn’t as big as NHI critics fear. There’s a likelihood that it will be challenged in court on the grounds that it erodes the constitutional rights of both patients and health-care professionals.
