Ayala: The U.S. Supreme Court’s surprise ruling on voting rights could impact Texas

The story about a former commander in chief who vowed to safeguard the nation’s secrets was so explosive you may have missed Thursday’s surprising 5-4 Supreme Court ruling against Alabama’s congressional voting maps.reflective of their population growth — and thus their full voting rights under the law.

One San Antonio political scientist predicted that Alabama’s case will have major implications for Texas and other Southern states. The St. Mary’s University professor emeritus said Sunday that the Texas case, filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, puts forward the same question that Alabama plaintiffs argued.

“This decision most definitely comes as a surprise because the Roberts’ court has voted to limit the power of the Voting Rights Act in cases dealing with the law,” said Alicia Reyes-Barriéntez, assistant professor of political science at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
