The two-story home was designed in the late 1890s by noted architect Alfred Giles for Stewart and his wife Georgia Grimshaw Stewart, then among the Alamo City's most prominent citizens, according to a 2020 article in the San Antonio Report. He was a president of the San Antonio Bar Association and she a charter member of the Woman’s Club of San Antonio.
The couple's 2,800-square-foot home was also relocated from another spot in King William long after their deaths, the article also noted. The San Antonio ISD purchased the property decades later with plans to raze the house so it could expand nearby Bonham Academy's playground. However, neighbors blocked that plan and the cottage got a new lease on life in 2016, when a local developer relocated it several blocks away from Bonham, according to the San Antonio Report. A massive renovation followed.
After its recent restoration, the Solon Stewart House is a mix of old and new. The upgrades augmented its Golden Age architectural features and 11-foot ceilings with a more open floor plan and modern features including a sleek kitchen and a pair of linear fireplaces.
