Beric, testifying in his own defence on May 4, told court he’s been thinking about the incident “every day since.”

The officer gave only partial testimony as court officials had scheduled four days for his trial in early May. Beric is expected to complete his testimony — and undergo cross-examination from the Crown — when his trial resumes in August.

Beric was informed there was a man “with short white hair covered in blood” who was knocking on random unit doors. He was told paramedics had also been dispatched. A still taken from security video shows Derrick Weyman moments before he was brought to the ground by police.Beric said he asked the two OCH community safety officers already onsite to “guide me to where the danger is.”

“At this point, we don’t know if someone is injured or injuring somebody else, or worse,” Beric testified. “All of this happens simultaneously,” Beric told court. “I don’t know who he is, but I see a man covered head to toe in blood, a shocking amount of blood. His hair, his face, his hands are dripping, like he’d dipped them in red paint. And his clothes looked like he had been rubbing blood all over him.

Weyman has a history of minor offences and a history of mental health struggles. He was not charged with any crime on Aug. 4, 2021 and was not being placed under arrest that night, court has heard. Beric was armed with a Taser, but due to the “close quarters,” he said, “it wasn’t the right situation for that.”In earlier testimony, Dorken estimated the encounter lasted 30 to 45 seconds from the bathroom to the narrow hallway, where he testified Weyman “took a swing at me” and fell to the floor as Beric intervened.Article content

Halawah also testified that her view of the takedown was “partially obstructed” and her recollection was unclear on certain points. Halawah and another security officer would later check the second floor to find a smashed glass fire escape door, “and that seemed to be where the trail of blood started… there were handprints all over the walls in blood.”
