A deal to extend the nation's debt ceiling that President Joe Biden signed Saturday included language cementing in place his plan to end a pause on student loan payments that's been in place since the start of the COVID pandemic. President Joe Biden on Saturday signed legislation extending the nation’s debt ceiling into 2025, avoiding U.S. default on its obligations for the first time in its history. Woven into that legislation was language cementing in place Biden’s previously stated plans for student loans. The pause on payments will be lifted no later than Aug. 30.
An estimated 45 million people owe a combined $1.6 trillion for paused student loans — more than Americans owe for any kind of consumer debt other than mortgages.
