A think tank wants to trial giving £1,600 a month to a group of 30 people without any obligation, to assess the impacts of a Universal Basic Income scheme

A new pilot to trial the effects of a Universal Basic Income is on the cards, as the think tank behind the plan is seeking financial backing.

Autonomy believes this approach would alleviate poverty. Will Stronge, Director of Research at Autonomy, said: “A guaranteed Basic Income could be transformative for welfare in this country. Cleo Goodman, co-founder of Basic Income Conversation, said the approach could simplify the welfare system. She said: "We’re hopeful that this plan will result in the first ever Basic Income pilots in England.
