Case threatens to "wreak havoc" on drug development and approval, drugmakers say

Medication abortion faces its next legal hurdle this week in a case with major implications for reproductive rights as well as prescription-drug regulation.

Mifepristone, first approved by the FDA in 2000, is part of a two-drug regimen used in the vast majority of medication abortions, which account for more than half of all abortions in the U.S. The Supreme Court’s decision last year overturning the longstanding Constitutional right to abortion heightened the focus on medication abortion, which for many people is more accessible than procedural abortion methods. Only about 55% of U.S.

In response to an application from the Biden administration, the Supreme Court then froze the Texas ruling while the litigation continues — allowing mifepristone to remain available, where abortion is still legal, while the case grinds through the courts. Ultimately, the case is likely to wind up back before the Supreme Court, experts say.

Gov. Cooper needs just one Republican to help him save abortion rights in NCOne day after vetoing a 12-week abortion ban that North Carolina Republicans pushed through the legislature in less than three days, Gov. Roy Cooper speaks with Ali Velshi about the effort to save abortion rights in his state. Republicans have a supermajority in the North Carolina state legislature – but just barely. “All we need is one Republican to step up,” Gov. Cooper says, referring to the fact that he only needs one Republican member to vote against overriding his veto in order to protect North Carolinians’ reproductive rights and stop the “monstrous” abortion ban from taking effect. “Your zip code shouldn't determine your constitutional rights but that's where we are with the overturning of Roe v. Wade.”
