Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai is one of the territory's most prominent pro-democracy figuresThe British son of a jailed Hong Kong media tycoon has denounced the "hypocrisy" of the UK government.

The 75-year old tycoon, who founded the pro-democracy Apple Daily paper, is among the most prominent of the so-calledpro-democracy activists currently on trial for subversion. He may spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted. "It's very sad to see a democratic government being afraid - or asking permission even - to speak on behalf of one of its citizens that is in prison for freedom of speech," said Sebastien Lai.
