Lord Dannatt says the government's Illegal Migration Bill will lead to 'bitter arguments' in the House of Lords, adding that he plans to table an amendment regarding the 'appalling' treatment of Afghan veterans. Latest: 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602 and YouTube

The Illegal Migration Bill's passage through the House of Lords was never going to be straightforward, and today strength of feeling in the Upper House became clear.

Justin Welby's criticism was no surprise - he has previously spoken out against the government's immigration policy and called the Rwanda scheme"ungodly". There was some support for the bill from the likes of former Conservative leader Lord Howard, who said he believes the government's plans will work as a deterrent.

The aim in No 10 is for the bill to get through all its stages by the summer, and attempts to water it down will slow down the whole process, as well as threaten the PM's pledge to"stop the boats".
