House Republican leadership is continuing to stand by Santos following the 13-count indictment. Among the House's GOP leadership, there have been no calls today for Santos to resign.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, during a press conference this morning, said that the charges were serious -- but did not call on Santos to resign. And in September 2022, while running again, Santos again included falsehoods in his financial disclosure forms, according to the indictment. If convicted on all counts, he faces up to 20 years in prison -- though it's by no means certain he would serve that much time.Federal prosecutors in Central Islip, New York, accuse Santos of engaging in a"scheme to defraud" his campaign donors.
