Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) called for a clear set of rules to be set for the conduct of the Supreme Court.

In a Sunday appearance on NBC's Meet the Press, Hutchinson argued for more transparency in the court, and for Chief Justice John Roberts to set forth rules for justices to know what they can and cannot do. His comments come in the wake of news that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas had accepted lavish gifts and favors from a Republican billionaire, raising ethical questions.

“The court needs to be transparent, first of all. They need to be clear on what their reporting rules are. They need to review those to make sure they’re very similar to the other public officials and branches of government, which has broad reporting requirements,” he added. Hutchinson went on to say that the current rules haven't been sufficient, as seen by the backlash against Thomas.“Clearly, they have not been sufficient,” he said. “They’ve changed those, but I think they need to step up just simply in terms of their transparency, so the American people understand what the rules are and what is required and is similar to other public officials.”

The Arkansas Republican announced his candidacy for the U.S. presidency last month, presenting himself as a conservative alternative to former President Donald Trump. The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll has him polling at 1% in the Republican primary.
