Murder-accused says he brandished knife as 'last scare tactic' before student was killed, trial hears

A man accused of murdering a student in Fallowfield has told a court he only brandished a knife during the fatal incident as a ‘last scare tactic’.

As they go past him, it is said Charlie Robertson told Mr Pottinger - then aged 19 - to ‘do a kick flip’ — a skate trick — as he was holding a skateboard at the time. The defendant reportedly told the man to ‘jog on’. Mr Pottinger has already pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article, and today claimed he purchased the knife in order to apply grip-tape to a skateboard deck, and had an idea to set up a business supplying custom grip tape designs.

After spending several hours with friends at The Friendship Inn and Bar 256, Mr Pottinger left alone and decided to buy some takeaway food. The incident with Mr O’Connor took place on his walk to the fast food outlet Chester’s.
