Call for Govt to Correct False Claims on Nigeria Media - WatchdogThe Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged Nigerian authorities to correct false claims that its research shows Nigeria as the only African country in full compliance with the protection of journalists' rights. The CPJ has documented attacks, prosecutions, and harassment of journalists in Nigeria, and its research reveals that at least 24 journalists have been killed in the country since 1992, with 12 of these deaths connected to their work. The call for a correction comes after the Nigerian Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, made the false claims during a briefing to promote the government's human rights agenda, which was chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari. This is not the first time Nigerian authorities have misrepresented CPJ's research on press freedom in the country.
