Federal judge declines to block Illinois gun law, calls 'assault' rifles 'particularly dangerous'

DuPage County, Illinois, Sheriff James Mendrick tells 'America Reports' he began protesting the ban after receiving hundreds of complains and concerns from citizens.Illinois' strict"assault weapons" banU.S. District Judge Lindsay Jenkins said that the gun control laws are consistent with the United States' historical tradition of firearm regulation, and that the gun owner was unlikely to show they are unconstitutional.

Javier Herrera, a Chicago emergency room doctor who volunteers as a medic for the local Special Weapons and Tactics team, is suing Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Cook County officials to overturn the statewide"assault weapons" ban and similar local laws. Herrera, who owns several restricted guns, argues the laws violate his rights under, interfere with his ability to train with the SWAT team, and that the large-capacity magazine ban makes certain guns he owns inoperable.

"This is well in line with earlier laws regulating carry and progressing to restrictions on sale and possession, in and out the home," the judge found.
