The federal government has introduced legislation that would allow victims the opportunity to opt out of publication bans.

But she found she wasn’t allowed to share the ordeal on social media because of the routine, almost-automatic publication ban on her own identity.

For Victoria’s Kelly Favro, being able to speak publicly about her sexual assault helped her counteract the shame and stigma that she felt accompanied her experience. “I didn’t know what a ban was or how to ask. No one in the courts had told me,” Favro said. “Because my name was hidden, so was his, and I wanted to be able to protect other women who meet him in a casual dating capacity like I did.”

If passed, the bill introduced in the Senate will require judges to ask prosecutors if they’ve consulted victims on publication bans.Article content
