French President Emmanuel Macron's unpopular plan to raise France's retirement age from 62 to 64 was enacted into law Saturday, the day after the country's constitutional body approved the change.

Macron's signature and publication in the Official Journal of the French Republic allowed the law to enter into force. The authorized changes will start being implemented in September, French government spokesperson Olivier Veran said.

The nine-member council's decision capped months of tumultuous debates in parliament and fervour in the streets. Spontaneous demonstrations took place in Paris and across the country after the ruling. The government argued that requiring people to work two years more before qualifying for a pension was needed to keep the pension system afloat as the population ages; opponents proposed raising taxes on the wealthy or employers instead, and said the change threatened a hard-won social safety net.

"The president's remarks are very much awaited" and will both seek to appease tensions in the country and explain decisions that have been made in the past months regarding the pension reform, government spokesperson Veran said.

They have the government they deserve. You reap what you sow.

Unpopular is an understatement….

🤣

Democracy at work. Decisions made by the elite few who don’t give a shit about the people who put them there.

. French people are funny

France can no longer be considered a democratic country when the representatives no longer listen to the people. Just like Canada.

'unpopular' lol

It may be unpopular but truth is people are living in to their 90s now and working well beyond 65!

When a Government borrows and spends hundreds of billions of tax dollars on illegal immigration, failed green energy projects and a globalist agenda. The quality of life for their own citizens suffers..... Same thing happening in Canada.

People are going to just have to get over it. I remember when lowercase conservatives raised our retirement age to 67. We didn’t tear up the streets for Pete sake! We just waiting for the next party to come in and lower it again (Liberals).
