Charlene met Prince Albert II of Monaco at a swimming competition in Monte Carlo. Ten years later, the couple became engaged, and in July 2011, they officially wed. Take a look back at their romance:

Princess Charlene of Monaco and Prince Albert II of Monaco leave the religious ceremony of their Royal Wedding in the main courtyard at the Prince’s Palace on July 2, 2011, in Monaco.

Today, Princess Charlene of Monaco turns 39 years old. The Princess was born Charlene Wittstock in 1978, in present-day Zimbabwe. Wittstock and her parents relocated to South Africa, and in 2000 she represented the country at the Sydney Olympics. The same year, Charlene met Prince Albert II of Monaco at a swimming competition in Monte Carlo. Ten years later, the couple became engaged, and in July 2011 they officially wed.

Charlene wore an Armani Privé gown for her wedding—channeling her late mother-in-law, Princess Grace. Since then, Princess Charlene and Prince Albert have undertaken more and more royal duties together, and have also welcomed the birth of their twins, Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques. The family celebrated the twins’ second birthday just last month, and spent the holidays in Monaco before heading to Ireland for New Year’s.
