The AFIYA CenterDALLAS — Reproductive justice advocates are rallying behind a Dallas-area couple after authorities took their 3-week-old daughter over concerns about her medical needs.
“The doctor gave them options for care that the family agreed to follow,” Qiana Arnold, a doula and birth justice advocate with the Afiya Center, told NBC News. “They even agreed to connect the doctor with their midwife, but they were clear that they were keeping their baby under the midwife’s care. It felt like retaliation from the doctor.”

This is ridiculous!! My youngest was premature and jaundiced. Once he was stable I was allowed to take him home and treat the jaundice with breast feeding and sunlight! This family is being railroaded. It's absolutely absurd!

Sometimes jaundice can be helped out at home but not always is this the case. Knowing how slow Dr’s are to admit patients, the jaundice levels were probably high. As a parent, our job is to keep them safe.

Advocates as in child abusers? Jaundice is a sign of liver disease. This is not something that can be fixed by home remedies.
At a certain point not getting your child the medical care they need is neglect and abuse. Liver and kidney failure is already a serious concern, and the neonate aspect compounds that significantly. I wonder what their plan for care was. On the one hand I hate to defend the state

This is not the whole story. The baby had a dangerous level of jaundice severe enough to potentially cause brain damage. The dr repeatedly called& texted and finally warned that he would call CPU if they didn't seek treatment.

The actual story...The baby's bilirubin level was 21.5. At 20.0 it starts to cause brain damage because it can cross the blood brain barrier. The couple ignored the doctors calls and texts, and he finally texted them he'd call CPS if they didn't respond. And here we are.
This is ridiculous. I have had two children with jaundice. Both were sent home with us and we put them in front of a sunny window. Then a week later they had a blood test and were fine.

So the newborn, whos been breastfeeding, has been away from her mother for over 2 weeks? Almost half of her life so far! I’m sure the milk will dry up & she’s now forced to bottle feed. As well as missing out on critical comforting. I wonder what the long term effects will be.

Normally I wouldn't agree with home tx but jaundice is treated with uv light. As long as they know to cover her eyes well and it's warm, take her outside in a diaper and let the sun do its thing. That's how it was treated for decades after it was discovered light was the answer.
