Melissa Chatzimanolakis’ brother Anthony died while awaiting trial at an Ontario jail late last month, marking one of the latest amongst an increasing number of inmate deaths in recent years – but Melissa says she’s refusing to let him become “a sad statistic.”

“We did everything together,” Melissa told CTV News Toronto in an interview over the phone Thursday. “He was a happy, loving, caring person.”

The family has said that initial investigations and autopsies performed on Anthony suggest he may have died of a drug overdose, but concrete answers, including a coroner’s report and toxicology results, could still be up to nine months away.“We were only 10 months apart,” Melissa said. “My brother and I have been side-by-side our whole lives.” That changed last September when Anthony was arrested after being accused of vehicle theft, carrying an unlicensed, loaded firearm, and harassment.

He often spoke of the pain he was in, suffering complications from a 2019 motorcycle crash, Melissa said. Anthony was scheduled to receive a surgery in November 2022, but the procedure was cancelled and the family was not provided with a clear plan for Anthony’s healthcare past that point, she said. Now, Melissa says she’s been left to wonder what exactly happened to her brother.

“There needs to be more accountability,” Melissa said. “To ensure that proper checks are being done to prevent illicit drugs from being available inside these facilities.” “It’s not an exaggeration to say that people are now dying because of the failures of our justice system,” Premier Doug Ford said at Queen’s Park Monday. Two days later, the province tabled a motion calling on the federal government to take immediate action on “meaningful” bail reform.

Don’t do drugs, can’t blame anyone but the family and the dead guy himself

DONT DO DRUGS how is it possibly anyone else’s fault but the adult himself who used the drugs, overdosed, then died? Common, anyone feel like taking responsibilities for their own actions, understanding there are consequences.

He should have gone to an encampment....

Guards/co set him up. Guaranteed. Should be murder charge on the co. Premeditated murder. Happens all the time.

Alleged carjacking scum - sister said would give shirt off back - yet rob you at gunpoint? “Anthony was arrested after being accused of vehicle theft, carrying an unlicensed, loaded firearm, and harassment. The charges had not been proven in court, and he had not been convicted.”

These girls and guy's are adults. It has always been a constant fight to control the drugs inside an institution. You play with fire and fire will kill you. They made that choice to use themselves. Not the Correctional Staff or the Ministry.

My sympathies go out to all the law abiding people and victims of crime who struggle every day and don't go around with guns and steal cars.

Don't do crimes then

Sister on TV making him out to be a saint. He was arrested for having an unregistered handgun and for vehicle theft. He’s been incarcerated more than once. I feel bad for what happened, but he made his own choices

Don’t commit crimes. Problem solved

Sooooo, safe to say bail hearing in canceled?

The guy robs others and his sister says “he was such a nice guy”

Isn’t this why we have catch and release problems?

So he did the following “last September when Anthony was arrested after being accused of vehicle theft, carrying an unlicensed, loaded firearm, and harassment” and his sister says he was the most caring and loving 😂😂😂 uh huh…

Hey brother sounded like he was a sack of sh*t. Good riddance. One less thug off the street

Half you trolls need to be in jail

He was a good guy, we've heard that line before...good guys are not gun carrying criminals....Sorry for your loss.

Don’t do stupid stuff if you can’t handle prison! He is not a victim!

Allegedly

Welcome to provincial jail

Inmates are our least concern

✔️

Don’t do drugs then simple

The guy was a thief and died of doing drugs. Sorry he died but alt least he won’t be out reoffending.

Ah, the picture of a loving father holding his young baby to show the face of humanity of a criminal. What about showing the sad faces of his victims that put him in prison awaiting trial in the first place?

Do lethal drugs, suffer lethal consequences.

One less problem for the system

Is the trend that they're all wiggers?

The guy that stabbed 16 y.o. boy at Keele Station was on probation. Does anyone prefer immediate release on bail

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

Yea Anthony is a good person at heart. But he got busted carrying a gun. I highly doubt for target practice. One less dangerous offender in the world is good for all the legit good people in the world. Melissa didn’t do a good job with her brother is is apparently a saint. 🙄

Given the ease of getting no surety bail in the last few years this fellow must have had a long enough criminal record to keep him in for trial. I understand her wanting to seek justice but he was responsible for being there and, by an OD, taking his own life.

Everyone is a saint after they're dead.

The last thing we need is more advocates for criminals

Jail sucks. Don't do crimes

He was a criminal. Why this shit are news?

I have compassion about someone passing away. Yet at the same time; you can't blame the jail system for their overdose. 'last September when Anthony was arrested after being accused of vehicle theft, carrying an unlicensed, loaded firearm, and harassment.'

Actions, meet consequences.

Correctional facilities are saturated with employees who get paid by the government on paper, and organized crime syndicates under the table. Smuggling drugs are the least of their misdeeds, they are accomplices to murder. Evil people need to pay.

Well they obviously didn’t do everything together or she would be in prison also.

While it is a sad loss for the family, there is a reason he was in jail.If there were no reason for arrest,if he was not doing anything wrong,he wouldn’t have been in jail.Let’s not only look at the sad outcome but the individual’s actions to get them where they are-accountability

Here’s a solution Don’t commit a crime

Simple. Don't be a criminal.

Well he was in jail for a reason

I would only sympathize if he was innocent 😇… but there are so may losers out there making our society a mess..

More transparency needed for prisons, mental facilities and old age homes. Those who are locked up are vulnerable to unjust treatment within.

From other accounts I've read this was a bad guy. Not happy he's dead but glad he won't be able to reoffend.

Don't commit crimes next time

The concern is how he gets drugs. The fact that he died of a drug overdose is not the issue. Use drugs. You may die. The more you f around. The more you find out. He found out. Nobody else’s fault but his and his poor decisions. Cost him his own life. I think it’s about time we go back to holding adults accountable for their own actions and stop blaming everyone else.
