The Justice Department announced Wednesday it has reached a $144 million agreement in principle to settle civil cases stemming from a 2017 mass shooting at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, which left 26 dead. Officials said the settlements will resolve claims from more than 75 plaintiffs, who alleged"the Air Force was negligent when it failed to transmit to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System information about the shooter that would have prevented him from purchasing guns from a federally licensed firearms dealer.

More than two dozen people were killed when Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire during a Sunday service at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs. Kelley, who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, had served in the Air Force before the attack. U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez had previously that the Air Force was “60% liable” for the attack because it failed to submit Kelley’s assault conviction during his time in the Air Force to a national database. The Justice Department said the settlement is still subject to court approvals. Freedom isn't free Texas citizens advocate for more guns, but when the guns are used against them, they sued the government. Hypocrites It's too bad that church didn't have legally armed law abiding citizens in the way this church in Texas did. A literal mass shooting was stopped almost immediately by a good guy with a gun. Only 2 good people died, and many more were saved that day.
