More than 100 Alaskans spoke out against a “parental rights” bill proposed by Gov. Mike Dunleavy, in a wave of opposition to the legislation many said would harm already vulnerable transgender youths.

“After reviewing and parsing this bill, I don’t think that it’s actually about parents’ rights. At least it won’t give them any rights that they don’t already have,” said James Selvog, a transgender man and teaching aide from Kodiak who addressed the committee by phone in the third hour of the hearing.

Jay McDonald compared schools’ practices in allowing students to identify as LGBTQ+ — even if their guardians don’t approve of such identities — to the forced indoctrination of Native American children who were sent to board schools. The House Education Committee meets Thursday evening, March 30, 2023 to hear testimony on the parental rights in schools bill.

“All parents are vital, even the ones with which we disagree on political, culture or religious grounds,” said Bishop, adding that the bill “invests in building trust among our students, their families and our teachers” and it would not detract from school boards’ local control.adopted by the Anchorage School District allowing students to change the pronouns they use at school without seeking parental permission.

Members of the governor’s office have insisted that the bill would not affect curriculum meant to address dating violence and sexual abuse — calledBut the parents of Bree Moore — who fought for Bree’s Law after their daughter was killed in 2014 as a result of dating violence — testified Thursday that they were opposed to the bill because they believed it would limit the required curriculum on healthy relationships.

Ruffridge said Friday he was still uncertain about whether the bill would impact curriculum contained in Erin’s Law and Bree’s Law, even after discussing the question directly with Attorney General Treg Taylor and requesting an analysis on the topic by legislative counsel.Rep. Mike Prax of North Pole, one of four Republicans on the education committee, said Friday that he would vote against the bill.

Maybe more of us approving of the bill could have gotten there if they didn't keep insisting on keeping our seat of govt in such an isolated place from the rest of Alaska. The rest of us have jobs to support our families, we don't get paid to travel around as fanatical activists!

We’ll see.

To fukn bad! Waa waaa I can only dream of a civil war to put a end to this liberal agenda! And trust me it will!

It’s a good thing that we have a representative republic where legislators are beholden to not the state, not to activist who flood limited public testimony, not to special interest, but to their constituents. It isn’t a mobocracy.

it is not a majority. Its a strong, vocal MINORITY who is lying. This bill will not take anyone's rights away at all. Anyone telling you otherwise has not read the actual bill.

Groomers are pedophiles that want to do very bad things to your kids.

Good for them, speaking out for what they believe.

100 people? Tell me what 100 PARENTS say. If these 'people' aren't parents then their arguments aren't valid.

Pray for those deluded by the lie of transgenderism. Especially those who push it onto the children. 'It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.'

100 speak. 200,000 don’t because things are fine. Piss off 200k or 100. Screw the 100

oNe HuNdReD peOplE dOEsnt rEpResEnT ALakSa=say the folks wanting to make it like Texas, Florida, etc. In religion, education, etc. etc etc etc…

🤣🤣🤣 100 people and you claim most Alaskans are against it. You guys are a joke.

You love to see it.

Transgender youths need substance mental health counseling. Being trans is a lie cast on children by evil adults.

Somehow the views of 100 people = the view of all Alaskans smh 🤦‍♂️

Gosh, 100 people? Alaska has a lot more living there than that and if they have kids I’ll bet they want to oversee their child’s education. They are paying for it.

Good. It’s needlessly idiotic, cruel, and pandering pile of garbage brought forth for a specific demographic intent on fantasizing for a past that never existed.

It was overwhelmingly opposed by Alaskans who happen to be in Juneau.

100 😂
