New law proposed to help all students in Wales speak Welsh language confidently by 2050

There is also a proposal to establish a clear system to describe language skill levels so that everyone has a common understanding of Welsh skills, including employers.

A consultation will be open until 16 June, and the Welsh government has pledged to introduce a Welsh Education Bill before the end of the parliamentary term. Other proposals include requirements on local authorities to promote Welsh-medium education, a national plan by ministers which would include targets for the recruitment of Welsh-medium teachers and a commitment to conduct a study looking at accelerating the growth of Welsh-medium education. The proposals aim to improve pupils' confidence with their Welsh language skills

"The proposals offer a foundation towards an education system that delivers Welsh medium education for all pupils," he said. However, it said the final law should include "ambitious statutory targets in terms of developing the Welsh-language education workforce and increasing the number of children receiving Welsh-medium education".

Fantastic news!

But the Welsh language is not spoken by anyone else in Europe, not sure there is any economic value to use it in the wider world. That said if the Labour Welsh government want to spend tax payers money on this so be it.

English people that can’t speak their own language so much as chew on it and spit it out implying it isn’t a good or “useful” thing that a country should act to protect its own language is quite the take …

In the words of J. R. R. Tolkien, “Welsh is of the soil, this island, the senior language of the men of Britain; and Welsh is beautiful.”

A law is needed to keep a language alive? That's telling...

Why? It sounds ridiculous

Patriotic step!

Because only 17.8% can speak Welsh, taking about flogging a dead horse 🙄

Very useful when conducting business worldwide.

What if they don't want to?

I'm sure the kids are really chuffed at that.

I'd have my kids in england learn Welsh before they learnt French or German tbf.

Child abuse.Welsh is a dead language, don't kill the children's developing brains, unless you want them to remain unemployed.

😂

Good luck, when i was at school, i didn't want to learn French!

It must be a very tricky language to learn if they’re saying it’ll take students til 2050 to speak it confidently.

Sentimental value high, actual world value low

That’ll be useful 😂😂

What is the point? They would be better off learning Chinese, frankly. It will be more use to them.
