NTA said the proposed measures, or Senate Bill 1812 and House Bill 3917, will help the government in curbing illicit cigarette trade in the country and sustaining the increase of its sin tax revenues.
“The proposed measures against illicit tobacco trade and smuggling were meant to protect the local tobacco industry and sustain and increase the Sin Tax collection for the government coffers,” NTA said. On the other hand, the tobacco industry is one of the strongest pillars of the country’s economy and the lifeblood of the North as it provides livelihood and sustenance to at least two million people including the 600,000 tobacco farmers and their families.
The tobacco industry in the Philippines continues to dominate the agricultural, economic social, and political aspects of the country. "Thus, the NTA is in solidarity with the proponents of the proposed measures as these would solutions to the curbing of tobacco smuggling and illicit tobacco trading/agricultural smuggling in the country,” it said.Ilocos Sur Second District Rep. Kristine Singson-Meehan has also expressed full support forSingson-Meehan said the measures, once enacted into law, will plug the P30 billion to P60 billion tax losses the government incurs annually due to tobacco smuggling.
