Isolation of close contacts still remains common in the aged care sector as providers balance managing outbreaks against a push from families to return to a pre-pandemic normal

Isolation of close contacts still remains common practice in the aged care sector, as providers balance managing outbreaks against a push from families to return to a pre-pandemic normal.

Psychologist Irene Fihrer, right, is concerned about the impact of aged care COVID-19 isolation periods on her mother. But some families say they are confused by the varied approaches individual providers can take to managing outbreaks, where their loved ones may still need to isolate as a close contact, while those who test positive outside face little-to-no restrictions.

After her mother was isolated as a contact of a COVID-19 case earlier this year, Fihrer said she struggled to remember how to eat and socialise. Earlier this month, her mother spent another week isolated because she tested positive to rhinovirus .“Even though this year we are allowed to visit my mother during periods of isolation, I have definitely noticed that she’s become more withdrawn, sleepy and her concentration and focus have declined,” she said.

Weekly data released by the federal Department of Health and Aged Care shows coronavirus outbreaks and cases have been relatively stable this year, and about half the number reported during the same time in 2022.
