House Speaker Kevin McCarthy , right, joins other House GOP Members to hold a press event to highlight the introduction of the"Parents Bill of Rights, at the U.S. Capitol, in Washington, D.C. At left is Rep. Elise Stefanik .
It showed how the adoption of an open amendment process in the House — a concession McCarthy made to win hardline conservatives' support for his speakership — holds the potential to send legislation down unpredictable twists and turns.
"Parents want schools focused on reading, writing and math, not woke politics," Rep. Mary Miller, an Illinois Republican, said during House debate Thursday.Members of the Service Employees International Union Local 99 -- who have been on a planned three-day strike since Tuesday against the Los Angeles Unified School District -- will conclude their walkout Thursday and return to work on Friday, the union said in a statement Wednesday evening.
McCarthy made the "parents' bill of rights" a plank in his midterm election pitch to voters to give Republicans a House majority. But the GOP's expectation of a sweeping victory never materialized, and even in school board races, conservative groups' goal of electing hundreds of "parents’ rights" activists largely fell short.
"It’s about every parent, mom and dad, but most importantly about the students in America," McCarthy said at the introduction event. Democrats also raised alarm that the bill as written would force schools to out LGBTQ students to their families, which can sometimes lead to abuse or abandonment.
No one is banning books....these ridiculous pages need to be removed
Fascism
Wait a second. Who wanted many books banned including To Kill A Mockingbird? Certainly not conservatives.
What book bans
Take you kids out of government schools!
Honest question. In what world do people think they will get every parent in every school in a school district to agree on a curriculum? This is why we elect school boards, and have Parent Teacher Organizations.
Book bans 🙄. Give me a break! Porn is not appropriate for anyone under 18. This should be common sense for everyone
