The Islamic republic, Saudi Arabia has released a United States citizen, Saad Ibrahim Almadi, who was convicted for more than one year over tweets critical of the government. 72-year-old Almadi, who also has Saudi citizenship, was arrested in November 2021 when he arrived in Riyadh to visit his family. He was however, sentenced last October to 16 years in prison. Meanwhile, after he appealed, the court increased the prison term to 19 years last month, according to a BBC report.

However, confirming his release, his son, Ibrahim, said his father was at a family residence in Riyadh but noted he was not sure when he might return to his home in Florida.

Speaking about the case publicly for the first time following the verdict, Ibrahim told the BBC that the only evidence finally presented to the court against his father had consisted of 14 tweets. US President, Joe Biden, said he had raised Almadi's case, and those of other US citizens who remained under a travel ban in Saudi Arabia, during meetings with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman when he visited last July.
