Microsoft users will be able to get ChatGPT-like technology in Word, Excel, Teams and other basic programs by default, to help summarise email chains and take meeting minutes.

Each worker’s Copilot will only be able to access files the user has permission for, so the bot can’t go snooping around the boss’ inbox. Microsoft is trialling the features with 20 enterprise customers before rolling out Copilot more broadly.Copilot will be able to summarise long email threads and chats, as well as draft reply emails or turn documents into PowerPoint presentations. In Excel, Copilot will analyse trends and create data visualisations in seconds.

“We’ve designed this in a way that people understand it is fallible, but it can help you get a head start,” Mr Friedman said.Microsoft rival Google made a competing announcement on Wednesday, saying generative AI would soon be rolled out into its Workspace apps such as Gmail, Google Docs and Slides.
