The Halalt First Nation near Chemainus is seeking the return of land taken from its reserve for the E&N railway in the early 1900s.
They said that the Snaw-Naw-As First Nation at Nanoose is getting back 10 acres of Island corridor land running through its reserve and the province is putting in $18 million for consultation. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming said the province and federal government are committed to work with First Nations to develop a shared vision and “will respect reversion of the reserved lands as part of the process.” He said the government recognizes how important the corridor is and “we would like to see it preserved as much as possible.”Halalt First Nation is disappointed at the lack of a clear announcement about what would be happening going forward.
The E&N railway has not carried passengers since 2011 because of the poor condition of the tracks. The line has largely been unused. The original placement of the railway corridor through the reserve was done unlawfully, without the authority required by the legislation of the time, she said. It was constructed without the nation’s consent.
The fibre optic cable was snuck under the tracks.I am betting that it will be gone as well. The rail cause my home to flood twice. Insurance is still yapping 5 years later. Nothing from the Rail Co except they cleared brush .
It’s part of decolonization. We need to support and normalize it.

Lawyer calls for more clarity over island railA lawyer representing a Vancouver Island First Nation says the federal government should be clearer about its plans for the E&N rail line. This rail will never run again. There are so many issues with First Nations communities from end to end, and a deeply flawed feasibility study that grossly underestimates the cost to revive. The only people who stand to gain are the developers The rail route has been extremely polluted with insecticide poisons over decades. It’ll take a lot of decontamination work to be done. Not to mention people have been breathing toxic chemicals in during airplane sprays for decades as well. Notices weren’t always given in advance I hope the rail line is active again. As far as pleasing only indigenous people, well that's completely wrong. From what I've witnessed over the last 4 years they will never ever be happy.
