A string of class actions against health services in Victoria, NSW and the ACT is underway over claims junior doctors have been underpaid.Ten class actions have been launched across Australia on behalf of junior doctors amid claims of widespread and systemic underpayment

Since the NSW lawsuit was brought in 2020, nine more class actions have been filed across Australia on behalf of junior doctors who worked in the public health system between approximately 2015 and 2022. In Victoria, the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation doctors' union is listed as an applicant on each class action, together with a named individual doctor.

Two-thirds reported they worked more than 40 hours on average per week, including one in 10 who worked more than 60 hours on average per week., 47 per cent reported never being paid for unrostered overtime.

it's common knowledge - they do a hard slog when young/junior ... but then later on, can easily command a $400,000+/salary for doing next to nothing + 30 hour weeks. Perhaps senior DR's should be taking pay cut + give some of their salary to juniors doing the 80hr weeks ?

Perhaps then the state should cap doctors wages to the Australian average.

If you're on a salary it's paid work. Regardless of how pitiful the pay is.

Good. Nurses, janitors, wards persons, radiologists, everyone should follow suit. Workplaces like NSW Health have taken advantage of staff for waaay too long.

Mandate they have to do a certain time in rural and regional hospitals BEFORE getting their provider numbers. Watch the fury then.

You mean like every other professional…..

Now do nursing.

Nsw government is one of the worst wage thieves around.

they are the slaves It is why they come and go

Lol. I was an intern in 1989. Is this story from then?

Society doesn't care for or value HCWs. Look how easily they were willing to discard them if they didn't take this vax that doesnt stop spread. Which now they don't even need to be up to date for.

They all got screwed 10 or so years ago when the AMA agreed that hospital doctors would not be rostered/paid for more than 48hrs or something similar. Therefore health department hides behind this and refuses to pay any other hours earnt. It was the worst deal in history .

The theft of labour in both private and public enterprise is endemic in our society and must be addressed.

Everyone is expected to work overtime for free, in every industry, it's entirely fucked.

abuse of junior doctors have gone for far too long, and their fault is that they are some the smartest, most hard working and caring ppl you can find. Australia needs to look after its doctors.

Bring it ‼️Nobody works for free

This abuse of young doctors has gone on long enough! This issue is totally known in the health system and in the Government. I don't believe young doctors are encouraged to file overtime claims. They work them to death and wonder why accidents and errors occur. Hope they win!

I thought doctors were smart ....they have contracts
