So you began your event with an indigenous land acknowledgement. Now what?Indigenous leaders and activists have mixed feelings about land acknowledgments. While some say they are a waste of time, others are working to make the well-meaning but often empty speeches more useful. Unless the land acknowledgement ends with you giving the land back to whoever you decide owned the land 400 years ago your acknowledgement is stupid and hypocritical. Indians are fortunate they were given reservations. Outside of the West, prior to 200 yrs ago, SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME, they'd have been defeated & then simply expected to assimilate into the victor's society. Imagine how many were living on land of other conquered tribes. 'My parents stole the house I live in from your grandparents. I won't give it back or anything but I do acknowledge that the deeds were in your grandparents name before forgery and hoodwinking. Land trust? Maybe, but I'm a bit vapid.'
