Tighter Controls Urged for 'Less Lethal Weapons' at Protests Africa

In a study of over 30 countries, rights group Amnesty International has found that the use of rubber bullets and other projectiles by security forces on protesters has led to injuries and even death. In a press release, the group called for tighter international regulation of the trade and use of such equipment, often known as"less lethal" weapons.

were triggered by grievances arising from years of harassment and rights violations by operatives of the police's Special Anti-Robbery Squad which led to its disbandment in October 2020. A new unit, the Special Weapons and Tactics Team , was formed to replace the controversial squad.
