Constance Marten and Mark Gordon have been charged in connection with the death of a baby whose remains were discovered in an area of woodland in Brighton, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.Barry Hughes, chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North, said: “The CPS has authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Constance Marten and Mark Gordon with gross negligence manslaughter.
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Constance Marten and Mark Gordon are active and that they have the right to a fair trial.”after a 48-hour search by hundreds of police officers and volunteers in Brighton.Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford said: “At this stage we have not yet been able to confirm the baby’s gender and post-mortem examination has not yet taken place.
“We know there are still many unanswered questions, and it is important that we give the investigation team the time and space they need to establish more details about the circumstances of this tragic death.” Hundreds of officers from the Met and Sussex Police were involved in the 48-hour search for the baby, which covered an area of around 90 square miles and involved sniffer dogs, drones and thermal cameras.
