JUST IN: A man sentenced to 25 years who law enforcement officials from the Harris County Jail say was released due to an “apparent clerical error” on Tuesday is back in custody, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted Thursday.

According to officials from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, 61-year-old Marcelo Perez Campos was sentenced last week on Feb. 20 to 25 years for aggravated assault of a family member. He was arrested after he allegedly shot the person he was dating back in 2021.

Campos was supposed to be transported to a state prison; however, he was inadvertently released on Feb. 28.On Wednesday, officials asked for the public’s help in locating the inmate. According to Gonzalez, Campos was taken into custody and returned to the Harris County Jail. Law enforcement officials have not said where Campos was found.
