“There’s no budget line in there because we haven’t made definitive plans to do that,” he said of a possible provincial police service.

Opposition leader Rachel Notley characterized the budget as dishonest with the UCP hiding its real priorities. The new funding for sheriffs comes in addition to the ongoing pilot project in the downtowns of Calgary and Edmonton where a dozen sheriffs have been deployed in each city using existing funding.

And, the Sheriff’s Investigative Unit is set to receive $1.7 million in funding to increase surveillance in rural communities.Article content Earlier this month, Toews was part of an announcement granting the city of Grande Prairie just under $10 million to aid its transition to a municipal police service should councillors there vote for such a move at a meeting on March 6.
