Experts say it appears likely that student loan forgiveness will get thrown out based on the Supreme Court's desire to limit executive power

and, during which justices asked questions meant to assess whether the lawsuits had legal standing and whether Biden was overstepping executive authority in canceling up to $20,000 in student loan debt for some 40 million borrowers.

The bottom line, experts say, is that it appears likely student loan forgiveness will get thrown out based on the Supreme Court’s desire to limit executive power. Conservative justices also questioned whether the student loan relief program was “fair” to borrowers who had already paid off their loans, or to the millions of Americans who decided not to pursue higher education. The line of questioning was brought up based on the plaintiffs behind, who are suing because they say they were unjustly exempt from some loan forgiveness. .

Even though Ahmed considers himself fortunate to work in a high-paying profession as an account executive, he says he’s “barely scratching the surface” when it comes to paying off his loans. “I’m at an age right now where I’m trying to develop a financial nest. And if I just have to pay more out of pocket every month… then that’s just gonna make all the other financial decisions I make tougher,” Ahmed tells TIME.

We were born in a time of predatory loans that did not exist in ANY OTHER GENERATION,this is not only inequitable but impactful to our economy as a whole. All them dollars that have circulated in our economy going to be gone & everyone in our position will just continue to struggl

The fact that the Left claim to be pro-rights & pro-democracy while throwing a fit when executive power gets limited on the grounds of individual rights is a good clue that individual rights & democratic processes were only superficial values for them.

Join the military! GI Bill = Free college. Plus, it will help you grow some 'thick skin' and not be so damn soft in life. WinWin

I love how Time positions this as the Supreme Courts desire vs following the Constitution and limiting executive overreach .

Biden should seat 4 more judges.

Sometimes you need to do the right thing even when it is hard. Young people are being priced out of life by unaffordable tuition and have no choice but to sign the loans that are designed to keep them in debt for decades.

This is definitely a huge executive power overreach. The founders of this country must be rolling over in their graves that a president of the USA 🇺🇸 would deign to think he had that authority. balanceofpowers judicial legislative executive USConstitution

Those damn 3 branches of government and their checks and balances

Why not let the borrowers with unsubsidized student loans change $15,000 of those loans that are not subsidized loans to subsidized loans if student loan forgiveness gets thrown out.

But they couldn't limit his power for all the money sent to the Ukes. Hey student loan kids Biden chose the Ukes over you. I would be very upset. Yes I am now stirring that pot.

Plus it’s illegal, so 🤷‍♂️

Funny how they never wanted to limit executive power when a Republican was in the White House. Plus The Education Department is implementing a LAW the Congress passed! 😡

Which Supreme Court are we talking; the banana republic supreme court that throw out Roe v. Wade? I don't expect something rational from this court. It is a political court not Justice court.

Remember

So what limits judicial power, like overthrowing Roe v. Wade?

Elections have consequences. Appointing SCOTUS justices and other judges is among those consequences. Think your vote won’t matter? Think again! WhenWeAllVote
