A majority of the Supreme Court's conservative justices seem skeptical of Biden's student loan relief plan.

Both the Trump and Biden administrations invoked the law to pause student debt payments without penalties during the pandemic. Then last year, President Biden, pressed by some progressives in his own party, went further with a plan to provide up to $20,000 in debt relief for borrowers with limited earnings.Estimates of the plan's cost have ranged from $300 billion to $430 billion, but on Tuesday at the Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Roberts went high.

Prelogar replied that in this case, the secretary of education made the necessary findings to justify the loan forgiveness. Without relief for debtors, there will be a"wave of default across the country with all of the negative consequences that has for borrowers," she said. Indeed, she argued, the Biden plan"is precisely the type of context where the executive should be able to implement those emergency powers.

The court's three liberals had a very different view. Justice Elena Kagan pointed to the expansive words of the statute. On Tuesday, the states hung their argument on a claim that the Biden plan, by discharging millions of loans, could end up depriving the state of Missouri of revenue from the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority, known as MOHELA.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson added that the court should"be concerned about jumping into the political fray unless we are prompted to do so by a lawsuit that is brought by someone who has an actual interest."

Oh that's good... make it a left/right thing instead of a law thing... brilliant work npr. 🤡 🤡 🤡

A more apt headline would be “Supreme Court skeptical of President’s authority to relieve student debt via executive action.” Spoiler alert: he can’t. Only Congress. SC just doing their job.

Your body, your choice? Your loan, your payment.

But they certainly didn't mind just 'forgiving' all those billions of free PPP 'loans' that went to their rich white donors... I mean how is a rich white business owner supposed to recoup his business losses? Just earn it back? Hahaha! What are we, peasants

As they should be. Biden does not have the authority biden

pelosi was in charge of the Congress and never made a move toward the 'debt forgiveness' .. SCOTUS job is not controlling the purse strings

Conservatives do everything they can to fuck shit up for normal people.

They should be. Half a trillion dollars for votes is a crime. The SCOTUS should cancel that bribery. $10k to $20k is not going to be a significant help to anyone; its just for votes.

Go figure noconfidence

In 2007 home owners struggled but banks got billions of $$ in federal funding under a Conservative government. It’s sickening.

😵‍💫 Free money we got free money over here. So stupid Biden doesn’t have the authority to do it. It’s a scam poor little crappy educated liberals will need to pay for their mistakes in choosing a career.

Pay your debts, losers.

Take from the poor and give to the rich. TaxTheRich ScotusIsCompromised GOPFascistTraitors 3 black robes placed on our court by a traitor. GinniThomasSeditiousConspirator

I, as most Americans are, skeptical of NPR and democrats

becasue it's not a loan forgiveness plan. it's a debt transfer plan.

Three people who lied to the senate under oath and the angriest man in the universe want to own the libs and fuck over Americans? Shocking.

Because it doesn’t help rich people?

Because they are political hacks. Hopefully that skepticism doesn't lead them to another faulty decision.

Oh, so now we have a Supreme Court that somehow thinks that a sitting PRESIDENT doesn’t have the inherent authority to just unilaterally change the terms of lending contract just because the Constitution doesn’t give him that authority?!?! Impeach Kamala!!!!!

If they were working instead of protesting, they would have more money.

Still a perfect political move by Biden. “I tried to help you…the right wing of the Court screwed you.”

I, and most Americans, are pretty skeptical of the Supreme Court

How about Congress regulating lenders so students can pay a reasonable interest rate and not be penalized with exorbitant late fees etc.?

The phrase 'conservative justices' shouldn't exist. The very nature of being a judge is that one shouldn't have partisan ties. SCOTUS needs to be dissolved. A handful of unqualified people should not be entitled to affect this many lives, and so profoundly.

We thought we were so smart with this “three branches of the government” schtick turns out it’s just 9 ppl

They can be skeptical all they want, if it's legal they need to award in his favor. If it's not legal, we need to know why previous presidents were allowed to do it. The Supreme Court should be nonpartisan.

Kavanaugh didn’t seem to mind when someone paid off his debt, so he can’t be one of them. Right? I mean, that would be….🤔… hypocritical, hollow, duplicitous, insincere, oily, and phony.

The problem will still exist PredatoryLoans

If it hurts minorities, conservative silence. If it helps minorities, conservative howling.

….and they should be. Biden overreached his authority and should have gone through Congress like any other major bill that involves this much money.

What do Supreme Court Judges know about students and loans ? A privileged bunch who don’t even know how much their parents spent.

They are skeptical of a womens right to self... so not really suprised.

The crooked court believes a lot of things

Because it's illegal, pay your own damn loans off.

For over 40 years I paid off every loan that I ever had. In the 1980s, when mid-teen interest rates were the norm, I worked two jobs and did without things...but paid my obligations. It's called taking responsibility for one's actions and understanding what you are getting into.

Of course the entitled boomers don't want people to have anything good. Who needs this activist supreme court anyway?

Can I get a mortgage relief and car payment relief? I didn’t realize the consequences either. 🙄

That’s because they are hacks and I honestly don’t understand how they even have standing.

SCOTUS needs to remember they’re responsible for upholding pure law, not playing power trip games! Pure law is NOT about what a judge personally likes or dislikes! Justices, do not disrespect America’s democratic judicial system!

Plumbers get to pay for some little brats gender studies degree

PAY YOUR OWN DEBTS! That goes for you too NPR! Defund NPR!

Most of us think that little cabal is kinda sketchy itself.

Most of us think that little cabal is kinda sketchy itself.

Most of us think that little cabal is kinda sketchy itself.

“Nobody’s telling the one who set up the lawn service business he doesn’t have to pay his loan,” Roberts said. “He still does, even though his tax dollars support the forgiveness of a loan for college grad who’s going to make a lot more than him over the course of his lifetime.”

I'm skeptical too bc it's not the govt that should pay for it. Universities that lowered entry standards and offered fake degrees while raising tuition should pay for it just like any other institution that commits fraud

A majority of the Supreme Court's conservative justices don't care about the majority of American's thoughts about anything.

Pay your debts. That’s life.

Because it’s outside the Executive preview.

They weren’t concerned about giving trillions to businesses during the pandemic, but relieve a percentage of that in debt for middle class and poorer citizens? Now that is just to much! Of course, conservative lemmings are lining up to slit their own economic throats in praise.

I fixed your headline: ‘Liberal justices ignore the constitution in an effort to support Biden’s student loan relief plan’ defindnpr

Why would you not think that they would be in that corner. After all it is 'predatory' big business against the defenseless consumer. Guess who wins that battle every time with this court.

Ah it will cause chaos not to side with Biden.

why of course they do. it would be the right thing to do since de-regulation encouraged predatory behavior. so of course the neo-fascists would be against correcting the situation.

Pay your bills

They already sold their souls to pay off their loans.

Because it’s not legal…
