In the 1700s and 1800s, states across the country passed laws to keep guns out of the hands of slaves, free Black people, Native Americans and Catholics.
Such discriminatory gun restrictions would be unconstitutional today, but they have entered the gun-rights debate as judges look to apply the Supreme Court’s decision last June that said gun restrictions must be anchored in historical traditions.
The 14th amendment was passed in part to block the anti-gun laws in the South designed to prevent freed slaves from possessing firearms. It acknowledged the inalienable right to self-protection.
This is literal systemic racism. And people who oppose gun rights are partaking in it shamelessly while claiming to care about 'Black bodies'.
All gun laws are racist. From the very first gun laws in the country to the new pushes for gun bans today. It's always been racist and classist.
