The Trudeau government, which acknowledges foreign interference in Canadian elections, has been studying the idea of a foreign influence registry law for years, but so far it has failed to act. “The act will force greater transparency by exposing those who do seek to influence on behalf of foreign regimes our polices, public debates and decision-making,” Housakos said last year, referring to foreign influence operations carried out by China and other bad actors such as Russia and Iran. What’s clearly required is a new and more transparent process for reporting to Canadians on foreign interference in our elections.
